Organization Highlights, by Steve Mallory
------------------------------------------------------------

Things are continuing with The Stroke Network Incorporated.
We have recently added two more committees, besides the
existing Finance Committee, the Expert and Newsletter
Committees.

In case you are wondering what those committees are, the Expert Committee
isn't a committee for experts; it's actually our
committee to define our organization policy and procedures for
the Ask the Expert web page. We want to make sure that we have
covered our bases and have adequate standards when accepting
health professionals to that area. You should go to
http://www.strokenetwork.org/professionals/ in order to visit
the web page for Ask the Expert.

The other committee that we formed, the Newsletter Committee,
has been put in place so that we can upgrade and develop this
newsletter into one of the best monthly health newsletters on
the Internet. We will be looking to improve both content and
format.

The Expert Committee is being chaired by Lisa Mikutis, LMikutis@strokenetwork.
org, and the Newsletter Committee is
chaired by Lin Wisman, LWisman@strokenetwork.org. Please contact
them if you would like to volunteer for those committees. Both
committees might be able to add one or two more volunteers to
the current committees, if you would like to volunteer for one
of our other staff positions please e-mail Pat Provost,
PProvost@strokenetwork.org.

We have not received our 501©3 non-profit status, yet, but you
better believe that we are proceeding with our infrastructure
as if we had. There is tons of work to do and we are doing it
every night of the week. This organization will soon receive its
approval and with want to be ready!

Editor's Message, by Lin Wisman
------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the final issue of the Newsletter for 2001. We hope
you, your family and your friends have a wonderful holiday.

We begin this month with an article by David Ray describing his
current situation in New Zealand. This followed by three reviews:
a product review, a website review, and an introduction to the
web site drugs.com. Finally there is information for those
in Iowa on regular Stroke Club Meetings for the group. Different
Strokes

If you're looking for a great outing try the Harry Potter movie,
"The Sorcerer's Stone." Go to the matinee on a weekday, which
means you avoid the under 18 crowd which is bound to be rowdy
in anticipation. The film is a great one. The 2-½ hours pass
very quickly.

Stroke In New Zealand by David G Ray
------------------------------------------------------------

We are now approaching the end of 2001. The years seem to pass
faster as we get older. Over the last month the Lower Hutt
Stroke Club has enjoyed two gatherings. The first was our
club's 20th birthday although some thought it had been in
existence in an unofficial capacity for a year or two earlier.
I believe that we are the oldest club in New Zealand. So, on
our birthday we had enjoyed the de Latour singers, a group of
older men and women who sing beautifully. They sang many older
ballads, some of which we had not heard for many years including
some wonderful Maori melodies. Many of our members joined in
with the singers making the afternoon very enjoyable.

Two weeks later we had a most informative talk and slide display
by a Podiatrist. Many stroke victims suffer from foot problems
especially as we get older, such as corns and bunions and this
presentation was extremely useful for our members. I myself have
had a few corns, and I learnt a lot. The Podiatrist talked for
an hour and could have held our attention for a further sixty
minutes. After the talk, and during afternoon tea, she was
surrounded by members with plenty of personal questions. As
the old song says, "Feet are not to be sniffed at." In December
we will have our Christmas lunch, the final event of our year.
Summer has arrived here in New Zealand. As I type this the
Sun is streaming down on a November morning. There is no wind
Which is surprising seeing that Wellington is known as the
windy city, especially at this time of the year. It is going
to be a hot day.

This is my last letter for the year. I have enjoyed composing
these little epistles and giving readers some idea of life in
New Zealand for a stroke victim. I will continue to do so in
2002. May I wish all readers of this e-mail a very happy and
enjoyable Christmas and may the year 2002 bring you even
further happiness and health.

Web Site Review, by Barbara Layne
------------------------------------------------------------

As we enter the 2001 holiday season, we are reminded that this
has truly been a year filled with heartache and sorrow. As a
stroke survivor, I am thankful for my recovery, my family and
friends, and that I have been able to find this wonderful
Stroke  Network to learn from and share the feelings and
concerns of our unique group. Just as we recover and regain
our strength, our country will do the same. I pray for all of
you and I pray for our country. I hope the New Year brings
peace to everyone.

The website I have chosen this month is www.stroke-tia.org
"An Educational Resource on Stroke and Transient Ischemic
Attack (TIA)" It contains all of the "standards" and I am
sure we all could recite most of these by heart:

   Stroke Overview
   Stroke Risk Factors
   Stroke Prevention
   Stroke Rehabilitation

It contains a video web cast series with information for
"Life After Stroke." You can see/hear information from top
authorities, survivors, and the National Stroke Association.
You can be reminded of upcoming web casts via email and there
are archived web casts available on demand. Each web cast can
be printed to keep for future reference.

There are conversations with experts from all over the country
dealing with research, medications, procedures, etc. used in
stroke diagnosis, recovery, and prevention.

The site is produced by Healthology.com, which is another
wonderful health information site and is created in
collaboration with the National Stroke Association.

Introduction to Drugs.com, by Judy O'Neill, Pharmacist
------------------------------------------------------------

We are pleased to announce the recent launch of the Drugs.com
website, a free online drug information service.

We are sure members will be interested in the www.drugs.com
website which provides a convenient, unbiased and reliable
source of Drug Information at one of the most easily remembered
website address's on the internet.

Of particular interest is the Drug Interaction program, and
Drug Information listings presented at both Professional and
Consumer levels. Both are very useful and highly sought after
resources. Members will enjoy the convenience of having
such valuable information available at one easily accessible
location - at the simple and memorable Drugs.com website.

The Drugs.com website is totally independent and not affiliated
with any pharmaceutical company. The data is based on the USPDI
and supplied by Micromedex Thomson Healthcare and Cerner Multum,
both well respected and established suppliers of medical
information.
