Editor's Message, by Lin Wisman
------------------------------------------------------------
May is stroke awareness month. What can you do to help? Stroke
survivors and caregivers are both in a unique position to aid
in spreading the word of the symptoms of stroke and helpful data
as to how to successfully relate to stroke survivors. Congratulations
to each of us for having made it through another challenging, but
successful year!
Steve invites each of us to visit the new redesigned web pages.
Navigation has improved. Then he introduces the new fundraiser.
Tickets are being sold for $25 to raffle off a donated electric
scooter. Finally each of us is invited to become a mentor.
Next there is a special invitation to participate in the Stroke
Network fundraiser Steve wrote about. Don’t miss your chance to
help.
David Ray’s New Zealand Stroke Club didn’t meet this month so we
get the treat of the story of his four-day tramp trough Milford
Track.
Rhonda takes a break from humor. In honor of Stroke Awareness
month she writes an essay addressing the issue of stroke being
a preventable disease. The stroke survivor’s take on this issue
is bound to differ from many medical professionals.
This month we include three articles focusing on aphasia. There
is a review of Bungalow Software, which is designed to help those
with aphasia regain their speaking, reading, and writing abilities.
Henning van Aswegen shares some suggestions of how to communicate
with those who have aphasia. Following Henning’s article are excepts
from Polly’s book “BRAIN ATTACK: Danger, Chaos, Opportunity and
Empowerment.” At the end of her article is a list of helpful
resources. Polly and Henning are both stroke survivors who were
diagnosed with severe aphasia.
This months website review by Barbara Layne considers
www.differentstrokes.co.uk a site designed for young stroke
survivors.
Our biographies this month are by Beth Weil, a survivor of a
decade, and Tonya J. Schettner who is a new stroke survivor.
I hope you enjoy the reading.
