    Welcome to the September issue of StrokeNet. Steve Mallory updates members on all the current happenings including strokesurvivor.net email addresses now available. Kathy Bosworth contributes an article, which addresses the question of "What is a Caregiver." David Ray reports on the August meetings of the Lower Hutt Stroke Club.

    Jean Kirshenbaum shares three interesting stroke articles, which appeared in the press this month. Janice Rodriguez has located websites, which cover hobby help for the disabled. Next, Stroke Network members, who are US citizens, are directed to voting information. September Birthdays are listed. Finally the bios of Marty Arlen and Sharon Dale Stone are highlighted.     Steve urges all members to become certified mentors. He discusses the email link, which has been added to the message board this month. Emails are available to members. The first Chat 101 session was held. We are reminded of the Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser scheduled for October 1. A new brochure is now available.

    Website Review, by Janice Rodriguez
    Janice has located several websites, which are designed to offer help with hobbies to those with disabilities. She includes specific hobbies including woodworking, gardening, ham radio, and sports. Also included is a site promoting a book, which gives tips for conquering hobbies with one hand. Read her article and visit the sites to get ideas of your own.

    US Citizens Vote
    The US general election will be held on November 2, 2004. If you are a US citizen make sure your voice is heard. Visit the League of Woman Voters site (http://www.lwv.org/ link provided below) to obtain information on the date you must be registered by in your state. There is also information on how to register.

    If you have major mobility problems you may want to vote absentee. If you plan on visiting the polls check out the handicap accessibility ahead of time. In many cases poll judges will bring a ballot to your car if you are unable to access the polling place. In any case, make preparations early.

    Voting is a privilege. It is important that handicapped citizens make their voices heard.

    September Birthdays

She enjoys playing with her son, teaching him to play baseball. She also enjoys watching TV and talking with friends; 17th Graciela, 55, Argentina; 20th hwstock, 50, NV. Harlan is a survivor who enjoys outdoor stuff, transport phenomena, and computing algorithms. He is a frequent contributor to the message board and often helps members locate data on the web.

    24th msbrandon924, 55, MD. Stephanie is a survivor. She likes to read books and surf the net; 27th ssanchez, 44, CA. Steven is Forum Moderator for the Stroke Network. A survivor he enjoys reading God's word, sharing God's word and doing God's work; 27th Dale, 54, WV. Dale's interests include God, college football, NASCAR, golf and fishing; 27th Richard1027, 58, AZ; 28th Brightstar965, 39, FL. Liz's interests include her son, her job, online friends, reading video/DVD movies. She is a caregiver.

    To be sure your birthday is included on the list of member birthdays, add the date to your profile. From the home page of the Message Board, select 'My Controls', on the left hand side of the screen look for the category 'Personal Profile.' Select 'Edit Profile.'

    Bios: Marty Arlen and Sharon Dale Stone
    Marty Arlen stroked in January 2004. In his bio Marty shares the story of his life. Many will recognize Marty as 007 from the Message Board.

    Sharon Dale Stone is a 37-year survivor of stroke. She was 11 at the time of her stroke. In this bio she shares her story.

    Bios can be entered by you or sent to the editor. Instructions for entering the bio yourself: From the Members Bio page: 1) Click the button at the top 'New Image'; 2) Enter the following data: A) Caption: your name; B) Large text box: Enter the bio; C) Upload photo: At the bottom of the page upload your picture from your computer; 3) Save

    If you do not have a digital photo contact the editor at the address at the top of this newsletter. She can send you a snail mail address where you can send a paper photo to be scanned.

    Our Organization
    What is The Stroke Network? Where did it come from? Who are the people that work there? Read the FAQ if you would like to know.

    Just what is FAQ? I've seen it on the Internet several times but I've never understood what it stood for. What is FAQ and why does our organization have these letters? FAQ is an acronym for Frequently Asked Questions. It's basically questions that most people are going to ask if they want to know about your web site and service.

    Our organization has a FAQ in order to give you some background information and insight into our organization. The FAQ is linked from virtually every single page on our whole web site. If you scroll down the page and look on the left column you will see a button with a question mark. Click on the button and you will be hyperlinked to our FAQ web page.

    You will learn about the formation of our organization and it's history. You can find out who are our partners and learn about our basic policies. Most of the frequently asked questions can be found here but if you have more please let us know. The print version of this newsletter is available at the website.
