Welcome
to the September issue of StrokeNet.
This
week I was channel surfing and happened upon a tape of
the welcome home to South Dakota event held for Senator
Tim Johnson. You may remember he had a brain hemorrhage
in December caused by a congenial defect. It was an
inspiring event. He spoke for about ten minutes and
plans to return to congress next week.
Be sure
to read Steve's article. It gives the latest Stroke
Network news. Also read Chuck Hofvander's interview with
Dr. Richard Hartke, a Psychologist and Professor in the
Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at
Northwest University, Evanston, Illinois. It addresses
the issue of how stroke changes lives.
Next find a review of Stroke Network member Sharon Dale
Stone's book "A Change of Plans." It is a collection of
stories focusing on young female stroke survivors.
During August there was a lot of stroke news in the
media. Be sure to read Jean Guggenheimer's Stroke
Newsfeed review.
Marty
Arlen and Lin Mouat both provide columns. Both have
mentioned they would like to hear from more of you. When
you have a minute be sure to send an email.
We
continue our series exploring Stroke Network web pages.
This month we cover Information Resources. This is
followed by September birthdays and stroke anniversary
listing. Finally be sure to check out the bios of Doug
Lyons and William Adams.
Enjoy the September newsletter!

Stroke Network News
By Steve Mallory
This has
been a busy month (as usual) at The Stroke Network.
During August Steve sent a mass email to members about
finances. He reports on the inundation of responses
received. He also gives a link to information to help
members raise money.
The
store will soon have lapel pins. Unlike the other items
available at the store this will be a fund raiser. Read
more in the article.
Finally
Steve reports of the virus seen on the website this
month. It has totally been cleaned. If you need help,
Steve gives a link.

Help Towards Recovery
Expressing and Experiencing Emotions
By Lin Mouat
Emotional Liability is experienced by most stroke
survivors. Many laugh and cry at an incorrect moment.
This can bring embarrassment to both survivors and their
families.
Lin
writes about her experiences of having emotions that are
numb. There are times, however, when she sees hope.
