Vol 13, No 12

December 2013
Greetings,

Welcome to the December issue of StrokeNet, the newsletter of The Stroke Network.

It's December. The holiday decorations have been in the stores and on the internet for some time. This time of year poses special issues for stroke survivors and their families. I know I no longer do crowds (all my shopping is online) and I do not enjoy holiday gatherings. I successfully avoid or limit most of them!

December StrokeNet...

A special Thanks to our readers and staff is included. In Dancing with Stroke, Jim shares reflections on Surviving 10 Years. Walt Kilcullen's book "Brain Injury" is reviewed by Lin. In Speak No Evil, Erin and J.J. reflection on how life has changed since J.J.'s stroke five years ago.

Claudia, in The Juggling Caregiver, is working on making the holiday stress free. Lose the Blues and Have a Happy Holiday is the subject Angela tackles in Keeping Up the Fight. Winter Survival Tips are documented by Deb.

David reviews Peter Levine's book "Stronger After Stroke: Your Roadmap to Recovery." In Stroke News, Julia reports on three articles.

Bookends to this newsletter are Organization News and Member Celebrations. Be sure to read both!

 Enjoy the December newsletter!

What a Team!

Have you ever wondered who the people are who make this newsletter possible? Lin has pulled together a list of our current contributors with a small note about each of them.

Their volunteer participation makes this newsletter possible. It also gives them a way to "give back" and provides great therapy. What more could you ask for?

Thanks for all the work in 2013!

And thanks to all our readers. Wishing you the best of holidays.

Reflection on Surviving 10 Years

By Jim Sinclair

Jim is fast approaching his 10th Stroke Anniversary. In this article he reflects on rehabilitation and life after a stroke.

One powerful observation of his personal recovery and interaction with other survivors is: "The process of rehabilitation following a stroke is a process of recovery; not a process of restoration. We cannot put back what was previously there; but we can rebuild anew."

Book Review
Brain Injury
By Walt Kilcullen
Reviewed by Lin Wisman

Walt Kilcullen, who is a researcher for this newsletter, recently published a book on his experiences as a mentor and the research he conducted with experts on various aspects of Traumatic Brain Injury.

It is a great overview of brain injury and offers a lot of advice.

If you are a regular reader of this newsletter you may recognize many chapters. Most were originally published in this newsletter over the last four years. Many have been updated.

This attractively priced book is well worth becoming an addition to your library.
