December 2014
Greetings,

Welcome to the December issue of StrokeNet, the newsletter of The Stroke Network.

The holiday season is really here. If you have not done your shopping I recommend ordering over the internet. It means you do not have to battle the crowds or the weather! Definitely a win-win situation.

Remember to schedule in times to rest during the holidays. All the activity can be very tiring for stroke survivors. Plan ahead!!

In this issue...

David discusses Strategies for Surviving Stroke and Disability. Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End by Atul Gawande is reviewed by Lin. In "The Juggling Caregiver," Claudia shares some Ideas for Holiday Gifts.

Jim, in "Dancing with Stroke" shares his Eleven Years' Experience with Acceptance. Surviving and Thriving Through the Holidays is a reprint from December 2007. Member Story is Rob Hargis

Bookends to this newsletter are Organization News and Member Celebrations. Be sure to read both!

Enjoy the December newsletter!

By David Wasielewski

Many Stroke Survivors are confronted with recreating their life. David suggests finding talents where new handicaps do not matter. For example someone with aphasia can still play the piano. Aphasia does not matter to the piano.

Check out his examples including his own. Where are the places where your current handicap does not matter?

Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End

By Atul Gawande
Reviewed by Lin Wisman

Atul Gawande, who is a physician, explains how approaches to death have changed over the years. Because so many people are living longer what worked a hundred years ago is no longer adequate.

How do we as physicians, patients and families dare to put the wants and needs of the patient at the center. Death is an important part of the process of life.

A helpful read!
